ALRIGH2T at EASN Conference: Exploring Hydrogen in Aviation

  • Gianvito Apuelo of Piaggio Aerospace presented on the topic: ‘Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats in Aircraft LH2 Direct Refuelling at Airports”.

A new edition of the European Aerospace Science Network Congress (EASN2024) returned from the 8th to the 11th of October, 2024, to the renowned Concert Hall in the vibrant city of Thessaloniki, Greece, bringing together prominent figures from Europe’s aviation and space sectors, fostering collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Among the participants, ALRIGH2T Project proudly showcased its contributions, further highlighting the project’s commitment to advancing aviation research.

The 14th edition of the EASN Conference, hosted by the EASN Association and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, focused on the overarching theme of “Innovation in Aviation & Space towards Sustainability Today & Tomorrow”.

Key insights from the session

The EASN Conference, a flagship event for the European aviation community, spanned four dynamic days, featuring high-level discussion panels, impactful keynote presentations, and a variety of clustered and technical sessions. Workshops and dedicated European project sessions further highlighted cutting-edge research achievements, while exploring future trends and opportunities in aviation innovation.

Among the key sessions was “Fueling the Future: Hydrogen in Aviation – From Production to Aircraft Refueling”, where Gianvito Apuelo, representing ALRIGH2T’s partner Piaggio Aerospace, participated alongside projects GOLIAT and TULIPS.

Apuelo delivered an compelling presentation on “Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threats Analysis of Aircraft LH2 Direct Refuelling at Airports”. His talk emphasized key factors shaping the future of zero-emissions aviation, particularly through hydrogen refuelling. Piaggio Aerospace is a key player in ALRIGH2T, defining technical specifications for direct hydrogen refueling and participating in the testing phase alongside other consortium partners. The refueling procedure will be tested at Milan Malpensa Airport using a demo based on our P180 Avanti EVO aircraft.

The gathering drew a large audience and sparked vibrant discussions on topics ranging from hydrogen production and aircraft refueling to propulsion systems and hydrogen air combustion. For ALRIGH2T, this was a significant moment to present its progress and engage with other professionals and EU projects facing similar LH2 refueling challenges. These efforts all contribute towards the shared goal of creating efficient and standardized solutions for the global LH2 aviation ecosystem.

By participating in this leading forum, ALRIGH2T reinforced its commitment to collaborative and innovative research in LH2 refueling and propulsion systems. The conference provided an essential platform for exchanging best practices and exploring advancements, offering a vital space for industry, researchers, and policymakers to unite and shape the future of European aviation.
